This year’s celebration of the Lunar New Year called for a new approach. Rather than gather at the Golden Unicorn in Chinatown, the Lunar New Year Committee, in partnership with the Upper School Asian Culture Club, organized enriching experiences on campus ranging from calligraphy to origami. The traditional Lion Dance in the Meetinghouse was a highlight.
Wing Hong Yip Dragon Style Kung Fu, established in 1974, has performed at Friends Lunar New Year celebrations since 1996. Jeff Yip, whose father founded the group, spoke to Middle School students before the performance. Jeff explained, “Lion dancers require the skill of Kung Fu practitioners and need to develop upper body strength, motor coordination and stamina to maneuver the lion.”
